If you are planning a single lens kit, I'd definitely recommend the 18-105. If you want a 2-lens DX kit, you could go with 18-55 and 55-200 or for a bit more dough, the 12-24 and 55-200. If you have special needs, you are forced to buy extra lenses. For narrow d-o-f portraints, 50 mm f1.8 is a great DX solution.

I think the 18-135 is probably a bit sharper especially at the wide end in the corners, but the 18-105 does have VR. For travel doing scenic photography I think the VR on the 18-105 would be worth the sacrifice in range. For daytime action and chasing kids around though where VR isn't going to matter, I still prefer the 18-135.
